Breast Lift
 |
Breast sagging, or ptosis, results from the effects of gravity on breast tissue along with a natural loss of skin elasticity which occurs with aging. This condition tends to be disturbing to most women as breasts which were once shapely and youthful become droopy and flattened.
Breat lift, or mastopexy, is a corrective surgical procedure which elevates the nipple on the breast mound and tailors breast skin to allow for upward support of breast tissue deep to the skin. As there |
are various degrees of breast droopiness, a range of corrective surgeries exists. Each surgery is designed to establish symmetry, proper proportions and position of the breasts on the chest wall. Breast lift surgery often proves beneficial after pregnancy, lactation, significant weight loss and menopause.
Scar placement is an important consideration with breast surgery. For minor degrees of breast sag, a scar around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) combined with a variable-length vertical scar extending downward from the inferior-most point on the areolar border will result. In contrast, more moderate breast droop will likely involve these scars plus a curved horizontal scar hidden within the fold beneath the breast. This concept of scar location can be discussed in more detail during your consultation.
As breast lift surgery usually entails operating on the skin only, the recovery time is relatively short. Most patients return to a normal routine within a week or so. Final breast shape may not be apparent for several weeks after surgery as resolution of swelling and settling of the breasts takes place.
Breast lift surgery has proven to be very gratifying for women who wish to elevate sagging breasts and achieve a more youthful appearance. Feel free to contact our office for more information regarding this increasingly popular procedure.
