Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to address protruding ears; also called a "lop ear" or "cup ear" deformity.  This surgery can be carried out on children, adolescents or adults.  Children may have the procedure done before entering school so as to avoid teasing by their peers.

The technical aspect of this surgery involves an incision on the posterior surface of the ear, with re-shaping of the cartilage utilizing permanent sutures.  The procedure can be carried out in our office-based surgical suite, usually under intravenous anesthesia.

Post-operative discomfort is usually minimal and well managed with pain medication.  Recovery for most patients is within 1-2 weeks.  It is quite important to avoid any trauma in which the ear might get bent forward and tear the permanent sutures holding the cartilage.  A compressive sports band is worn as much as possible for the first week and subsequently while sleeping or engaged in excercise for at least 8 weeks thereafter.

Otoplasty has proven very beneficial for patients with various types of ear deformities. Please let us know if you feel this procedure is right for you or a family member.
