Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct drooping eyelids, bags and bulges about the eyes. These conditions develop as a result of laxity of the eyelid skin and protrusion of fat around the eyes. This surgery is not limited to older patients, as many individuals inherit a predisposition toward development of fat pouches |
at a relatively early age. As a result, surgical correction is appropriate where indicated for all age groups.
Traditionally, blepharoplasty is carried out by incising the skin of both the upper and lower eyelids. Through these incisions varying amounts of excess skin and fat are removed, depending on the individual patient's needs. At the completion of surgery, incisions are closed with very fine suture. In certain cases in which the lower eyelid skin is very lax, an additional procedure may be required to tighten the eyelid in order to prevent post-operative drooping.
When bulging of fat in the lower eyelid is the primary problem without excess skin, surgical correction is done with a procedure called the transconjunctival blepharoplasty. In this case, fat is removed through an incision made on the inside of the lower eyelid, eliminating all visible scarring. This approach has become quite popular, as it minimizes the risk of post-operative scarring pulling down on the lower eyelid and causing a deformity which may have to be corrected secondarily.
Most patients can return to normal activity within a few days of surgery. Bruising and swelling persist for one to two weeks typically, but can be camouflaged with make-up or fashionable sunglasses. Discomfort is usually relatively mild and quite manageable with the pain medication provided.
Blepharoplasty affords a fresher, more youthful appearance to the eyes and can enhance your existing facial features. In addition, it is capable of providing an improvement in certain patient's field of vision, as the excessive skin which had been blocking vision is excised. |
