Liposuction - View Photo Gallery

Liposuction was introduced to the United States several years ago.  This surgery is carried out in our office under sterile conditions on an outpatient basis, typically under intravenous sedation.

In considering liposuction, it is important to understand that fat cells lie beneath all areas of your skin, yet accumulate in greater amounts within certain regions.  When we gain or lose mild to moderate amounts of weight, fat cells are not added or lost but rather the amount of fat within each cell is altered.  This means that we are all capable of maintaining what is termed non-dietable or non-exercisable fat cells in areas which are, for the most part, genetically determined.

Liposuction utilizes a relatively high vacuum source attached to small probes which are passed through tiny puncture sites in the skin.  Fat cells are literally suctioned out, allowing the surgeon to contour various parts of the body, including the neck, back, waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, knees, ankles and arms.  For men, liposuction can be used to correct gynecomastia (enlarged breasts) as well as "lovehandles" at the waist.

Prior to suctioning fat from any area, a large volume of fluid is injected into the fat tissue.  This fluid contains medication designed to limit blood loss and reduce post-operative discomfort.  Termed the "tumescent technique", this modification has allowed safer removal of larger amounts of fat with a smoother recovery for patients.

Surprisingly, the recovery period is relatively rapid.  Patients are generally able to resume light activity the day after surgery and a normal routine within a week or so.  An elastic garment is worn for several weeks after surgery to help in attaining a smooth skin contour but usually does not interfere with your activity.  In fact, we encourage patients to start movement in moderation as soon as possible in order to lessen the stiffness which is part of the recovery process.

Liposuction has brought a new dimension to body contouring surgery, providing opportunities for patients which were not possible just a few years ago.  It certainly has proven to be one of the most exciting advancements in cosmetic surgery.
